Child Care Subsidy Updates

Hi Parents,

As you may know, there will be changes to the Child Care Subsidy as of the 10th of July 2023. From July, the Government will be spending $4.5 billion to offer more affordable subsidy rates to Australian families. What does this mean for you? This means that the Government will lift the maximum CCS rate to 90% for families earning $80,000 or less!

With the new changes, the CCS percentage tapers down 1% for each $5,000 of family income instead of the current $3,000, which makes families better off! If you wish to calculate your new child care subsidy, please follow the table below, or click here to use the CCS calculator.

FAQs

What are the changes to CCS in 2023?
If your family earns less than $530,000 annually, you will be eligible for increased child care subsidy (CCS) from 10 July 2023. This is because the CCS percentage you are eligible for depends on how much your household earns. This change is in addition to the higher sibling subsidy.

How does CCS get calculated?
To work out how much CCS you're eligible for we'll look at all of the following: your family's income. the hourly rate cap based on the type of approved child care you use and your child's age. the hours of activity you and your partner do.

What happens if you earn more than you accounted for in your CCS claim?
If you underestimated your family income, you may end up with an overpayment which you'll need to pay back. Centrelink will use the amount withheld to help reduce the debt. If you have a CCS overpayment, we may use some of your CCS each fortnight to pay this back.

How long does it take for Centrelink to approve a child care subsidy?
The entire process may take between four and six weeks

What is the highest percentage of child care subsidy?
90% is the maximum amount of subsidy a family can receive for one child.

How much will I save?
The below table shows the estimate of the new CCS rates and savings per income band (based per the example daily rate of $140).

Following on from this, changes will be made to your CCS automatically from 10 July 2023, and you will not be required to take action on anything. However, if you wish to research further, Services Australia have compiled a fact sheet that you can download for your knowledge. Click here to access the site and download the PDF document.

Did you know the Government also provides additional CCS support for families who need the extra help? Click here to determine if you are eligible.

Back to School Tips

You may have children that are about to start primary school, or ‘big school’ soon, so we thought we would compile a complete guide for dealing with that transition from child care to primary school!

Develop a daily routine for your child

Although this sounds like a simple thing, developing a strong routine for your child is one of the best steps towards the right direction when it comes to starting school. Before starting kindergarten, your child may not have had a regular daily routine. As a result, when school starts it would be a big shock for your child to consistently wake up, get ready and eat breakfast on time without any fuss. So, to prepare for this, create a consistent and regular routine that your child can adhere to in order to prepare them for ‘big school’.

Visit the school and familiarise your child with their new environment

Another way of establishing a seamless transition from child care to primary school is to visit the primary school with your child multiple times before the start of the school year. This will aid in familiarising the child with their new environment, so it is less daunting for them. Ultimately, making it easier for your child to leave child care and settle into their new school environment.

Encourage your child to explore their interests

90% of a child’s brain develops by the age of 5, so it is really important to encourage your child to take part in extracurricular activities during their time at child care. At St George Montessori we offer an extensive range of extracurriculars for this reason. These activities include Happy Feet, Soccer Joeys and Fit Kids. Extracurriculars are vital in order to build your child’s confidence and develop social skills!

Go back-to-school shopping

If you make the experience of transitioning to a new school fun for your child, they are less likely to be nervous and will be more willing to engage with their new environment and be excited. You can create excitement within your child through a variety of activities; such as back to school shopping and picking out their new uniform, lunch box and stationary! A quick trip to Officeworks to pick out their favourite cartoon pencil case may be the solution to settling their nerves, as they will get excited to use their new stationery at school everyday!

Read about starting school with your child

This could be done through reading fun books about children who are growing up and starting ‘big school’. Some great resources include; ‘Kindergarten, Here I Come!’, ‘Next Stop, Kindergarten!’ and ‘Welcome to School, Oliver’. This will aid your child in building their excitement and confidence for this next chapter in their lives!

Help establish your child’s confidence

Establishing your child’s confidence can be achieved through seeking their opinion on certain topics, such as what they feel like eating for dinner, or letting them choose their outfit for the day. These opportunities for responsibility will build their confidence and give your child a little boost of responsibility.

Also, the New South Wales Government is offering parents 3 x $50 vouchers for each student starting school which are valid until June 2023. These vouchers are intended to help parents with the cost of back to school supplies such as books, school uniforms, shoes, bags and technology. For more information click here

At St George Montessori, we are proud to offer a school readiness program to ensure your child is well prepared for their early stages of ‘big school’! Key learning outcomes of the program are developed to build confidence and a love for learning, have a strong sense of self and identity, develop a sense of connectedness and an appreciation of culture, as well enhance your child’s social skills. Through completing our School Readiness program, your child will be set up for success as they transition into ‘big school’.

Happy Lunar New Year!

Happy Lunar New Year everyone!

We hope you enjoy this special time with your loved ones!

For those of you who may not know what Lunar New Year is, keep reading! It is a Chinese celebration that recognises the beginning of Spring and the start of the New Year in the lunisolar calendar. It is a time where people enjoy yummy food and carry out traditions that symbolises abundance and togetherness, which contribute to underpinning the Montessori values. The Lunar New Year is the most important holiday and celebration in China and is quite significant in other countries such as South Korea and Vietnam.

The date is determined by the lunar calendar, and falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice on December 21. The Lunar New Year is celebrated on a different date each year as a result, but it is usually celebrated around the 21st of January to the 20th of February.

Lunar New Year lasts  for 15 to 16 days as it begins with the new moon and ends on the following full moon. So, it is a lovely time of celebration with the people that matter most! Because this is a time for celebration, it is common to wear red throughout the holiday as the colour red symbolises strength and prosperity, and is a lucky colour for the Chinese community! After the holiday is over, people tend to return to their usual everyday clothes and activities.

At our centres, we love getting into the spirit of celebrations! This week the children have participated in the Lunar New Year spirit by doing various arts and crafts activities, while our educators taught them all about the holiday! Culture and community holds a large significance in our Montessori curriculum. The cultural component embedded within the Montessori curriculum is vital to expose the children to different cultures, celebrations and traditions across the globe. Cultural lessons teach children about different ways of living, types of food, traditional clothing and the range of environments people live in. Culture is important to learn as they are able to gain insight into the interconnectedness of various traditions and ways of living.
